Wine to ward off the Flu?
Resveratrol is a chemical found in red wine and it has been shown to have cardiac and antioxidant benefits. The University of Minnesota's Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy just completed a new study that says it may also help ward off the flu. Resveratrol seems to block host-cell functions that are essential for viral replication.
Why do I need Vitamins? Vitamins are vital to bodily functions and prevention of disease. Some people mistakenly believe that they can get all the nutrition they need from today's foods. Here are eight reasons why we need to supplement:
1. In North America, our soil is 85% depleted which means there is very little
mineral or vitamin content that our vegetables, fruits and grains could absorb
from the soil.
2. Eating too fast or eating too much causing indigestion which limits our body's
ability to absorb the good stuff!
3. Microwave cooking alters the nutritional structure of food.
4. Finicky eating--choosing the same foods repeatedly and not eating enough variety
of foods.
5. Smoking and too much alcohol and caffeine can block the absorption of vitamins.
6. Taking antibiotics interferes with nutritional intake.
7. Pesticides and chemicals used to grow food lowers the nutritional content
of what we eat. Another reason to buy organic!
8. Diets and improper eating habits leave out entire food groups and limit healthy
nutrient consumption.
Unhealthy Salmon?
Salmon is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids and one of the healthiest fish we can eat--if it is wild salmon. Farmed salmon are hatched in plastic trays, crowded in underwater cages, fattened with soybean, given antiobiotics, and injected with a synthetic pink dye so that they will be pink. This dye contains a chemical that has been banned for human use. Salmon raised on a farm has been shown to contain higher levels of dioxins and PCBs than wild salmon. Make sure the salmon you eat is wild!
5 Tips for Better Sleep Here are some ways to help get a peaceful night's sleep. Ideally, we should sleep from 7 1/2 to 8 hours a night. Before electricity, humans did not have sleep deprivation and they were healthier!
1. No television right before bed. 2. If your feet are cold or you have poor circulation, wear cotton socks to bed. 3. Sleep in the darkest room possible. If you get up to go the bathroom, try not to switch on the light or have the smallest nightlight possible. The light causes our brain to stop producing melatonin and seratonin. 4. Take a hot bath or sauna before bedtime. 5. Studies show that 30 minutes or more of daily exercise (earlier in the day) helps people fall asleep easier.
